This wooden statue shows St Dismas on a rough wooden cross, without Christ. The thief hangs with outstretched arms and bound feet, wearing only a cloth around his hips. The statue is carved in Val Gardena and painted by hand.
According to legend, Dismas is the penitent thief to whom, according to the Gospel of Luke, paradise was promised. In the Gospel the man remains nameless; the name Dismas comes from later tradition. His feast day is 25 March in the Western Church and 23 March in the Eastern Church. He is patron saint of, among others, those condemned to death and of carters. One legend tells that he helped the Holy Family on the flight into Egypt.
