Motif & meaning
St Anthony the Great is known as the “Father of Monks” and as one of the formative Desert Fathers of the early Church. His depictions show him as a spiritually steadfast hermit who sought silence and renunciation in order to find clarity and strength in prayer. The statue picks up this tradition: the staff with cross and its small bell is a classic symbol of vigilance and spiritual guidance. The open book points to the wisdom and spiritual teaching that Anthony passed on. The pig at his side is among the best-known iconographic attributes and stands, among other things, for the overcoming of temptation and for his role as patron. The flames at the base take up the so-called St Anthony's fire – a reference to trials and purification that are reflected in his life story.
In living and devotional spaces the statue conveys an atmosphere of calm, spiritual stability and protective presence. It suits everyone who values religious symbolism and is looking for a companion on their personal path of faith. For collectors of traditional saint statues, too, this motif is especially attractive because of its rich iconography. As a gift for a christening, First Holy Communion, Confirmation or patronal feasts, St Anthony holds a deeply rooted meaning and recalls steadfastness, courage and trust.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Anthony the Great is made by traditional hand craftsmanship in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, where woodcarving has been cultivated for centuries. The production process begins with the selection of high-quality lime wood, a wood that is especially well suited to detailed carving because of its fine structure. After drying comes the cutting to size, followed by the rough cut, in which the basic form is laid out. The fine cut then brings out all the distinctive features precisely: the carefully modelled folds of the robe, the characteristic beard, the open book, the dynamically worked flame and the finely designed attributes such as the staff with cross, the bell and the animal figure.
Depending on the finish, the statue is left natural, stained, polychrome-painted or fitted with genuine gold leaf. The natural version shows the pure grain and the clear lines of the carving. The stained variant underlines the warm tones of the wood and makes the relief look calm and harmonious. The polychrome version is hand-painted in several layers, with gold accents highlighting cloak edges, details and areas of light. For the genuine gold variants a gesso ground is applied and gold leaf is then laid on in the traditional technique; the antique version shows a characteristic craquelé structure that gives it special depth and a historical presence.
Depending on the series, the statue may carry the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms regional origin and traditional manufacture. Because of the pure handwork and the natural wood grain, every statue remains one of a kind, with fine variations in colour gradient and structure. The combination of elaborate workmanship, love of iconographic detail and high-quality surface finishing makes St Anthony the Great an expressive example of Val Gardena woodcarving.
