St Anthony with the Child Jesus in his arms is one of the best-known depictions of saints in the Alpine region. This statue is hand-carved and painted in Val Gardena; it stands well in a house chapel, in the hallway or beside the bed.
The saint meant is usually Anthony of Padua, a Franciscan and preacher from Lisbon who died in Padua. His feast day is 13 June. The Child Jesus in his arms is his typical attribute; according to legend a count found him at night smiling with the radiant child. He is regarded as patron saint of Portugal, Padua and Lisbon, of the poor, of lovers and marriages, and of lost things. In thesaints' encyclopaedia you will find more.
