The Salzburg crucifix follows a traditional Alpine form with a finely carved corpus. Christ on the cross is the central sign of faith in God's love and in the resurrection.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The cross with the “Salzburg crucifix” corpus is one of the characteristic depictions that cultivate a lively yet heartfelt visual language. The curved crossbar, the bowed head and the slight twist of Christ's body point to a tradition that conveys the expression of suffering not through drama but through finely measured movement. This form of depiction joins the emotional depth of the motif with a clear, calm aesthetic that is greatly valued in religious everyday life.
Many viewers find the figure especially consoling, as Christ's posture expresses a mixture of self-giving and peace. This makes the motif suitable for very different situations: moments of personal devotion, prayer corners in the living space, church rooms, or as a gift for religious milestones such as Communion, Confirmation, a wedding or a house blessing. In times of transition or quiet remembrance, too, this cross can take on an important symbolic role.
The combination of traditional lines and a compelling presence makes the “Salzburg crucifix” a motif that accompanies you in the long term and is not merely decorative. It appeals to people who value religious depth, artistic clarity and craft authenticity. The result is a depiction that unfolds its meaning in everyday life and festive seasons alike.
Finish, origin & special features
The cross with the “Salzburg crucifix” corpus is made entirely by hand in the Gardena Valley, a region that has been known for its woodcarving for centuries. Production begins with the careful selection and drying of the wood, usually lime wood, whose fine structure allows clearly defined contours and a harmonious fall of drapery. For larger models, glued blocks of wood may be used to reduce tension and ensure long-term stability.
After cutting comes the rough carving, in which the basic form of the corpus and the characteristic sweep of the crossbar are laid out. The fine carving defines the expressive posture, the typical anatomy of the Salzburg style and the details of the loincloth. The craftsman's experience shows especially in the modelled chest and abdomen and in the gently bowed head, which give the motif its emotional power. The whole figure is then finely sanded to bring out the natural look of the wood.
In the coloured finish the cross is hand-painted with oil paints in several stages. Delicate flesh tones, small wound marks and golden-brown accents on the robe create a balanced colour effect that supports the sculptural carving. A protective seal ensures the surface stays stable over the long term.
Finally, each cross is carefully inspected. Depending on the series, the Val Gardena quality label may be enclosed, confirming the traditional manufacture in Val Gardena. Thanks to the natural materials and the entirely hand-carved work, each piece is one of a kind – with its own grain, slight colour variations and individual traces of craftsmanship that make up the character of the piece.
