Crucifixion Group Relief – Hand-Carved in South Tyrol

This relief shows the Crucifixion group as a wall picture: an upright wooden panel with Christ on the cross against a mountain landscape and three figures at the foot of the cross. The panel with bevelled corners is carved and painted in Val Gardena and belongs on the wall, not on the shelf.

A Crucifixion group depicts the Crucifixion with several figures, usually Mary and the Apostle John, whom the Gospel of John also names. In a relief everything lies on one surface, staggered in depth. The figures at the foot of the cross are generally interpreted this way, without the workshop fixing any names.
