Motif & meaning
The crucifix with the figure of Christ is among the deepest symbols of the Christian faith. It recalls the sacrifice of Jesus and at the same time stands for redemption, love and hope. The corpus with cross shows Christ in a moment of quiet self-giving – with bowed head and open arms as an image of divine mercy and of reconciliation between heaven and earth.
The slightly curved form of the cross gives the work a natural, lively tension that draws the eye to the figure. The interplay of posture, loincloth and cross structure conveys peace and strength at once – a depiction that radiates comfort and devotion.
Whether in churches, chapels or at home, this crucifix invites reflection. It accompanies prayer, remembrance and gratitude – an expression of deep faith and of the bond between human being and Creator.
Finish, origin & special features
The corpus with cross is made entirely by hand in the Gardena Valley, South Tyrol – a region known for its artistic woodcarving for centuries. Each figure is made from carefully selected lime wood, which is preferred for its fine structure and stability.
After cutting comes the elaborate carving process: first the rough form is worked out of the block of wood, then in the fine carving the anatomy, the facial expression and the drapery of the loincloth are brought out. In the coloured finish the figure is painted in detail with oil paints – soft skin tones, highlights and fine gold accents give it depth and life.
The cross itself is made to fit precisely, sanded and, depending on the variant, stained or painted. After the final inspection the piece is given a protective lacquer that preserves the natural beauty of the wood.
Depending on the series, each crucifix may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms the authenticity of the handwork and the origin in South Tyrol. Slight differences in grain and tone express the one-of-a-kind character – each piece a sign of living tradition and spiritual craftsmanship.
