According to tradition, St Wendelin lived as a shepherd and hermit in what is now the Saarland. He is patron saint of shepherds, farmers and livestock and is venerated especially in rural areas; his feast day is 20 October.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Wendelin is among the most powerful and at the same time down-to-earth motifs of Christian popular piety. As shepherd saint and patron of farmers, fields and flocks, he embodies care, protection and responsibility for people, animals and landscape. The shepherd's crook, which he holds calmly and firmly, stands for guidance and a protective presence. The sheep lying at his feet points to his intercession and the close bond between the saint and the people who have trusted in his companionship in rural regions for centuries.
The figure radiates a quiet, nature-loving warmth. The gently inclined gaze and harmonious posture create an atmosphere of protection that can unfold in private living spaces as well as in chapels or prayer areas. Those who live with nature, animals or agricultural responsibility in everyday life find in Wendelin a symbol of constancy and blessing.
For religious feasts too – especially Communion, Confirmation or patronal feasts – the figure carries particular meaning. As a gift it conveys appreciation and a heartfelt wish for protection and success. The composition of crook, robe and animal figure brings the saint's traditional meaning to life and makes the depiction a lasting companion for families, farms and collections of spiritual art.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Wendelin is made entirely in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, an area known for centuries for its religious woodcarving. The work begins with the selection of the lime wood, whose fine structure allows precise working of facial features, animal depictions and folds of the robe. After cutting, the basic form emerges in the rough carving, before in the fine carving the characteristic details – the shepherd's crook, the sheep, the flowing drapery and the expressive gaze – are carefully worked out. Every line bears the signature of experienced sculptors.
Afterwards the surface is finished. Natural figures show the pure form and grain of the wood, while stained and multicolour stained versions emphasise the depth of the robe through warm gradations of tone. Hand-painted colour finishes are made with oil paints, which allow fine nuances and underline the character of the motif. Individual finishes may receive subtle gold accents, carefully applied using gold leaf.
Finally, every figure is subjected to a strict quality check in which proportions, expression and surface finishing are examined. Because of the natural grain of the wood, every figure has distinctive characteristics that make up its one-of-a-kind nature. Depending on the series, the figure may bear a Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for verified woodcarving from Val Gardena.
The combination of high-quality material, craft precision and traditional production makes the Wendelin figure a special object for religious spaces, farms and collections. The harmonious depiction of shepherd's crook and sheep gives the motif a timeless meaning that is impressively visible in the craft execution.
