According to legend, a dog brought bread every day to Roch when he was sick with the plague, until he recovered. That is why the pilgrim saint is depicted with a dog; he is patron saint of the sick and of animal lovers, and his feast day is 16 August.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Roch is among the best-known motifs of Christian art. Since the Middle Ages he has been regarded as an intercessor in times of illness and need and is traditionally shown as a pilgrim. The scallop shell on hat or robe points to his connection with the pilgrim way, while the dog as a faithful companion recalls the legend according to which it supplied the saint with bread. This combination of care, hope and perseverance makes the figure meaningful to believers and collectors alike.
In prayer rooms, churches and private living areas in particular, the figure unfolds a calm presence. The carefully designed posture, the downward gaze and the depiction of the leg wound convey both humility and strength. Many buyers choose this motif for special religious feast days, for recovery or as a gift of thanks after a prayer answered. Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago or other pilgrimages, too, find in St Roch a symbolic companion.
Through its traditional formal language, the figure combines cultural heritage with timeless symbolic power. It is suited both as the spiritual focal point of a room and as a personal sign of connection with protection, hope and confidence.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure is made in the classic South Tyrolean woodcarving tradition, as it has been kept alive in Val Gardena for generations. Every step – from cutting the wood through the rough carving to the finely worked final form – is done by hand. The use of lime wood allows particularly clear lines and fine detail work, visible in the design of the folds of the robe, the structure of the beard and the natural modelling of the dog. For larger sizes, glued wooden blocks may be used to minimise tension in the material.
Depending on the finish, the figure receives different surface finishes, each giving the motif its own effect. The natural version shows the pure structure of the wood and emphasises the precision of the cut. The multicolour stained version produces harmonious, warm tones – matched in three shades for additional depth. In the painted colour version, each figure is coloured by hand with high-quality paints. Gold and light accents set fine highlights without overloading the motif.
Finally, the figure is sealed and carefully inspected before it leaves the studio. The smallest differences in grain and colour nuance are characteristic of handmade one-of-a-kind pieces. Depending on the series, the figure may bear the Val Gardena label, which indicates regional origin and verified quality.
With this combination of handwork, selected materials and traditional design, the depiction of St Roch meets both aesthetic and cultural expectations and is suited to private and church spaces alike.
