Motif & meaning
St Luke is one of the four Evangelists and is venerated in Christian tradition as a learned proclaimer and careful chronicler of the life of Jesus. His Gospel is distinguished by a particular closeness to people, by compassion and by a clear, narrative language. In Church tradition Luke is also regarded as a companion of the Apostle Paul and as a bridge-builder between faith, education and lived charity.
In iconography St Luke is often shown with a book or scroll, which stress his task as Evangelist and scribe. The ox at his feet is his classic symbol and stands for readiness to sacrifice, service and steadfastness in faith. This attribute refers to the beginning of his Gospel and underlines the depth and seriousness of his proclamation.
As a saint figure, St Luke has special significance for churches, chapels and prayer rooms in which the Gospel is at the centre. His calm, concentrated depiction invites quiet contemplation and supports an atmosphere of recollection and reflection. In private home devotion, too, the figure can serve as a spiritual companion and encourage engagement with the biblical texts.
St Luke is also suitable as a gift for church occasions or for people who want to connect consciously with the Christian faith and its tradition. The depiction combines spiritual symbolism with a timeless, tradition-conscious formal language and gives the motif a dignified and lasting presence.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Luke is made in traditional wood sculpture in Val Gardena, South Tyrol. Every step is carried out entirely by hand, from selecting and drying the wood through the rough and fine carving to the final surface finishing. Master sculptor Karl Demetz oversees the artistic direction. All production takes place 100% in Val Gardena and follows the traditional techniques of the regional carving craft.
The material is predominantly lime wood, as it is distinguished by a fine, even structure and allows precise work on face, hands, folds of the robe and attributes. For larger figures, glued wooden blocks may be used to minimise tension in the wood and ensure lasting dimensional stability. After carving, the surface is carefully sanded and prepared for the chosen finish.
The different finishes give the figure a character of its own each time. Natural versions emphasise the pure carving and the natural grain of the wood. Stained and multicolour stained versions look calmer and harmoniously balanced. Hand-painted colour versions gain their depth from finely matched oil paints. For the genuine gold leaf version, a gesso ground is applied, onto which gold leaf is then laid.
Before delivery, every figure goes through a careful final inspection in which proportions, details and surface quality are checked. Depending on the series and finish, the figure may bear a Val Gardena quality label confirming its origin in Val Gardena. As a natural product, every wooden figure is one of a kind, differing slightly from other pieces in grain, colour tone and detail.
