The wooden statue of St Josaphat Kuntsevych shows the bishop with mitre, staff and book, his hands also holding a palm branch and a sword, the signs of the martyr. A piece for friends of the Eastern Churches and of Christian unity.
Josaphat was born in 1580 in Volhynia, entered as a Basilian monk in 1604 and became Archbishop of Polotsk in 1618. He campaigned for union with Rome and was struck down on 12 November 1623 in Vitebsk by opponents of the union. He was canonised on 29 June 1867. 12 November is his feast day and name day; the Diocese of Siedlce venerates him as patron.
