This wooden statue of St Otto of Bamberg shows a bishop with mitre and crozier who carries a book with a quill in his other hand. It is carved by hand in Val Gardena and suits everyone who bears the name Otto or feels connected with Bamberg.
Otto was Bishop of Bamberg from 1102, founded monasteries and, as a missionary, brought Christianity to Pomerania. He died on 30 June 1139 and was canonised in 1189; his feast day is 30 June. He is venerated as patron saint of the Archdiocese of Bamberg and as co-patron of the Archdiocese of Berlin. Book and quill are not a traditional attribute of Otto but a design detail of this statue.
- Material: wood from the Gardena Valley – mainly lime wood, depending on size also maple or Swiss stone pine
- Heights: 100 cm, 80 cm, 60 cm, 40 cm, 30 cm, 20 cm and 12 cm
- Finishes: Natural (finely sanded, untreated wood), multicolour stained (three stain tones with wax, with gold or silver accents depending on the motif), hand-painted (painted with oil paints, details in gold leaf and silver leaf, fixed with lacquer)
Otto’s Day on 30 June is a lovely occasion for a name day gift. You can just as well give the statue for the Confirmation of an Otto, for retirement, or for the corner of the living room where other saint statues already stand.
