Here Herbert stands as a bishop in wood, with mitre, a staff held high and a book in his hand. The statue is meant for everyone who wants to give a gift to a Herbert or would like a bishop in their own collection.
This usually means St Herbert of Turris, today’s Porto Torres in Sardinia. He was a Cistercian abbot and Bishop of Turris and died on 28 February 1196. Because there may be other saints of this name, the identification is not entirely certain; 28 February is usually ascribed to him as his feast day. The book is a design detail of the statue, not attested as an attribute of the saint.
