A wooden statue of St Irenaeus of Lyon: he wears a mitre, holds the staff in his raised hand and has a book in his arm. The book fits what he is known for – his writings.
Irenaeus was born around 135 in Smyrna, elected Bishop of Lyon around 178 and died around 202. Around 180 he wrote the work Adversus haereses against Gnosticism and is regarded as a co-founder of Christian theology. Pope Francis named him a Doctor of the Church on 21 January 2022. His martyrdom is not attested historically. His feast day and name day is 28 June.
