This wooden statue of St Rita of Cascia is meant for anyone looking for an intercessor in difficult times. It is carved by hand in Val Gardena (South Tyrol), in the partner workshop of our woodcarving workshop – every statue one of a kind with its own grain.
Rita was born around 1381 in Roccaporena in Umbria. She was a wife and mother, lost her husband and both sons, and later entered the Augustinian convent of Cascia, where she died on 22 May 1457. Pope Leo XIII canonised her in 1900. Many ask for her intercession in hopeless causes and in worries about marriage and family. She is depicted in a religious habit, often with a crucifix, roses and the thorn wound on her forehead, which according to tradition appeared while she was contemplating the cross. You can read more about her life in theLexicon of saints entry on Rita of Cascia.
