As a soldier, St Martin shared his cloak with a freezing beggar – the best-known gesture of charity. He later became Bishop of Tours; many celebrate his feast on 11 November with lantern processions.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The sharing of the cloak by St Martin is among the strongest symbols of Christian charity. In a moment of great empathy the Roman soldier meets the freezing beggar and spontaneously shares his cloak with him – an act that comes not from duty but from compassion. For centuries this scene has stood for mercy, human closeness and the readiness to help others in their need. The saint's powerful stance, his resolute gaze and the plain, vulnerable posture of the beggar make the message immediately tangible.
The figure is suited to churches, chapels and places where charitable values are at the centre. In a private setting, too, it serves as a reminder of gratitude, generosity and the importance of small gestures. In families, social institutions and parishes, the depiction is a strong sign of lived humanity and a popular motif for St Martin's Day and other occasions in which solidarity and care are at the centre.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Martin is made in traditional handwork in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, where the art of sacred wood sculpture has been practised for centuries. The selected lime wood is carefully dried before it is cut and, in the rough carving, brought into the characteristic scene of the sharing of the cloak. In the fine carving that follows, the expressive contours of the armour, the dynamic folds of the cloak and the finely modelled facial features of Martin and the beggar emerge. Every line is set by hand, so that every figure remains a distinctive individual piece.
Depending on the finish chosen, the figure receives its final look through different surface treatments. Natural versions emphasise the fine structure and grain of the wood. In the coloured finish, all areas are painted individually by hand: from the Roman armour to the soft skin tones of the beggar. Shading and fine transitions create a lively, narrative effect. For particularly high-quality finishes, gold leaf and traditional gesso techniques are used, giving selected details a noble, historic sheen.
Before leaving the workshop, every figure is strictly inspected. Depending on the series, it may bear a Val Gardena quality seal confirming its origin in Val Gardena. Thanks to the combination of craft precision, natural wood grain and careful surface finishing, an expressive depiction results that is equally suited to church spaces, social institutions, home altars and high-quality collections.
