Motif & meaning
St Mark is one of the four Evangelists and plays a central role in Christian tradition as proclaimer of the Good News. His Gospel is regarded as one of the oldest written testimonies to the life and work of Jesus Christ. In religious iconography Mark stands for energy, vigilance and the living transmission of the faith.
Typical of his depiction is the lion, which as his Evangelist symbol embodies strength, courage and royal dignity. This attribute also points to the powerful opening of his Gospel and to the spiritual authority of his words. The scroll in his hand underlines his task as scribe and witness of the Gospel and makes him a symbol of the written word of God.
The figure of St Mark has special significance for churches, chapels and prayer rooms in which the Gospel is at the centre. It is equally suited to personal home devotion and to people who want to engage consciously with the biblical texts and their spiritual depth. Through its narrative design, the figure invites contemplation and supports a calm, concentrated atmosphere.
As a gift for church occasions or as a sign of connection with the Christian faith, too, St Mark carries lasting meaning. His depiction combines spiritual symbolism with a traditional formal language and gives the motif a timeless, dignified presence.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Mark is made following the handed-down woodcarving tradition of Val Gardena in South Tyrol. Every step is carried out entirely by hand, from the careful selection and preparation of the wood to the final surface finishing. Master sculptor Karl Demetz oversees the artistic direction and stands for a balanced formal language and high craft quality. All production takes place 100% in Val Gardena.
The material is predominantly lime wood, as this wood has a fine, even structure and is particularly well suited to detailed carving. For larger figures, several glued wooden blocks may be used to minimise tension in the material and ensure lasting dimensional stability. The rough carving is followed by the fine carving, in which face, hands, folds of the robe and the lion are worked out precisely.
The different surface finishes give the figure a character of its own each time. Natural versions emphasise the wood grain and the pure carving. Stained and multicolour stained versions look calmer and harmoniously balanced. Hand-painted colour finishes gain their depth from carefully applied oil paints. For the genuine gold leaf and antique genuine gold leaf versions, a gesso ground is applied first, onto which gold leaf is then laid. The antique gilding is distinguished by a deliberately created craquelure that gives the surface a particularly traditional effect.
Before delivery, every figure goes through a strict final inspection in which details, proportions and surface quality are checked. Depending on the series and finish, the figure may bear a Val Gardena quality label confirming its origin in Val Gardena. As natural materials are used, every figure is one of a kind, differing slightly from other pieces in grain, colour tone and detail.
