St Leonard is the patron saint of livestock, especially horses, and of prisoners – the chain is his emblem. In Bavaria and Austria he is honoured with Leonhardi processions on horseback; his feast day is 6 November.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Leonard is among the most powerful protective motifs in Christian art. As patron saint of farmers, prisoners and farm animals, he has been deeply rooted in rural regions for centuries. The chain in his right hand symbolises liberation and help in times of distress, while the animal's head at his feet highlights his special connection to livestock and farming. The abbot's staff points to his spiritual authority and the care with which he accompanies people and animals alike.
The slightly bowed gaze and calm bearing of the saint give the figure a composed, comforting presence. The motif is particularly suited to places where protection and blessing play an important role: in chapels, farms, stable areas, prayer rooms or private living areas. In many regions St Leonard is still honoured today with processions and festivals that keep his significance as intercessor and patron saint vividly alive.
As a gift, the figure has strong symbolic depth. It is suitable for religious feasts such as Communion and Confirmation, for jubilees in a farming setting, for the blessing of farms and homes or as a personal gift of protection. The combination of chain, staff and animal makes the figure a motif that is at once traditional, powerful and full of human warmth.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Leonard is made entirely in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, a region known for its centuries-old tradition of religious woodcarving. The starting material is lime wood, whose fine, even structure allows precise work on facial features, chains, the animal's head and folds of the robe. Even when cutting, attention is paid to aligning the grain harmoniously, before the rough carving creates the basic forms of habit, staff and attributes. In the fine carving the characteristic details are then worked out – including the powerfully modelled chain, the realistically shaped animal's head and the clear lines of the robe.
The surface treatment varies with the chosen finish. Natural versions emphasise the pure character of the wood and let the craft shaping stand out particularly clearly. Stained and multicolour stained figures bring warm, earthy nuances to the motif and emphasise the sculptural depth of the drapery. Hand-painted colour versions are made with high-quality oil paints, which allow soft shading and give the animal's head, the chain or the areas of the robe particular liveliness.
Before a figure leaves the studio, a careful final inspection checks proportion, expression, quality of the paintwork and surface finish. As the lime wood used is a natural material, every figure has individual grain and slight variations in nuance, which make up its one-of-a-kind character. Depending on the series, a Val Gardena quality seal may also be enclosed, confirming the traditional origin from this craft-minded region.
The combination of high-quality material, experienced hand carving and the strong symbolism of protection associated with St Leonard results in a work of art that unfolds its effect especially in rural, church or spiritual spaces, and has a deep meaning both as furnishing and as a gift.
