St Anthony of Padua was a Franciscan and a gifted preacher. He is invoked as a helper in finding lost things and is the patron saint of the poor; his feast day is 13 June.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Anthony of Padua is among the most familiar and best-loved motifs in Christian imagery. The saint is shown here in a particularly intimate gesture: he carries the Child Jesus gently in his arm, while the two turn lovingly towards each other. This inner closeness stands as an emblem of trust, comfort and spiritual guidance. Anthony is regarded as a preacher with a great heart, a teacher of the faith and an intercessor in many concerns, above all within families.
The deep symbolism of the motif is reflected in the calm posture, the soft expression of his features and the composed bearing of the Child Jesus. The Franciscan habit, the rosary and the book – the sign of his teaching work – are classic companion elements of depictions of Anthony. The interplay of these symbols tells the story of a saint who, with his kindness and closeness to Christ, still moves people today.
In devotional rooms, family areas, church institutions or as a spiritual gift idea, the statue has an especially warm and comforting effect. It suits sacred feasts as well as personal occasions on which people seek accompaniment or blessing. Its depiction invites you to put trust and care at the centre of your own life.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Anthony of Padua is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena, South Tyrol – one of the most tradition-rich centres of European woodcarving. The production process begins with the selection of high-quality, well-dried woods, mostly lime wood, as it has a fine structure and allows especially detailed work. After cutting to size comes the rough cut, in which the basic form emerges. In the fine cut, experienced carvers work out the typical features of this depiction: the soft expression of Anthony and the Child Jesus, the deeply drawn folds of the Franciscan habit, the rope belt, the rosary and the symbolic book.
Depending on the finish, the surface is completed in different ways. Stained or multicolour stained versions bring out warm gradations of tone. The painted versions are built up in several layers of oil colours, which achieve an especially harmonious effect through their transparency and depth of colour.
The motif of the saint with the Child Jesus demands particular craft sensitivity: proportion, gesture and the interaction of the two figures must fit together convincingly, so that the inner warmth of the scene comes across. Every statue is a handmade one-of-a-kind piece with individual grain and slightly varying shades of colour. Depending on the series, the Val Gardena quality label may be present, which confirms the origin and traditional manufacture of the statue.
