Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Anthony with the Child Jesus is among the best-known and at the same time most touching scenes of religious art. Anthony of Padua is regarded as a great preacher and teacher, whose closeness to Christ is emphasised in many traditions. The motif shows this inner bond in a particularly vivid way: the saint carries the Child lovingly in his arm, while the two meet in a quiet dialogue of trust. The lilies stand for purity and fidelity in faith, the book for the proclamation of the Word of God. The globe in the hand of the Child Jesus recalls Christ as ruler over creation and at the same time underlines the intimate bond between God and humankind.
In living and devotional spaces the statue radiates a warm, comforting presence. It suits families, people on their spiritual path and all those who look for a symbol of care and divine closeness in everyday life. As a gift for a birth, christening, First Holy Communion or Confirmation, the depiction carries special meaning: it points to protection, guidance and the value of family bonds. Thanks to its clear symbolism and finely worked gestures, this statue appeals both to collectors of sacred art and to lovers of traditional depictions.
Finish, origin & special features
The statue of St Anthony with the Child is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena, South Tyrol – in a region whose woodcarving has been prized for centuries for its precision and expressive power. The process begins with the selection of finely structured lime wood, which is ideal for figurative depictions because it is so pleasant to carve. After expert cutting to size, the basic form is created in the rough cut, before the characteristic details emerge in the fine cut: the calm folds of the robe, the soft contours of Anthony and the Child Jesus, the filigree lilies and the modelled globe.
In the next step the surface is sanded smooth and, depending on the finish, primed and painted. The natural variant shows the wood in its pure beauty with clearly visible grain. The multicolour stained finish produces a warm colour effect that gently emphasises the lines. The polychrome version is made by careful hand painting, in which fine colour gradients and discreet gold accents provide depth and shine. For the version with genuine gold leaf a traditional gesso base is applied before the gold is laid on by hand, which gives it a particularly refined character.
Depending on the series, the statue may carry the Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for genuine origin in Val Gardena and traditional hand carving. Because each statue is carved and painted by hand, it has natural variations in grain and colouring, which make up its value as a one-of-a-kind piece. The combination of careful craftsmanship, high-quality material and finely tuned finishes makes this depiction an impressive example of Val Gardena sacred art.
