Description & details

The rose is one of the most beautiful symbols of Mary: Mary is venerated as the “rose without thorns”, and the rosary bears her name. The Rose Madonna joins this sign with the image of mother and Child.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

A statue of the Virgin Mary is a gift with meaning – for a wedding, a christening or First Holy Communion, for Mother's Day or for your own Herrgottswinkel (the traditional devotional corner). Discover more hand-carvedMadonna and Marian statues from South Tyrol.

Motif & meaning

The Rose Madonna unites in her depiction the purity of the rose with Mary's motherly love. In Christian symbolism the rose is an image of heavenly grace, beauty and love without blemish. Mary, as “Rosa Mystica”, has been venerated in this form for centuries. The figure shows her with gently inclined head, the Child Jesus protectively in her arm, the two joined by roses – an expression of tender closeness between mother and son.

This depiction stands for comfort, protection and the quiet strength of faith. The delicate fall of the robe, the harmonious lines and the calm posture give the figure a timeless radiance that fits any setting – whether home altar, room for devotion or living area.

As a gift for a christening, Communion or wedding, the Rose Madonna carries a special message: she recalls love, care and the blessing that grows out of faith. She thus becomes an image of lived spirituality and of a deep bond with Mary, patron saint of many families.

Finish, origin & special features

The Rose Madonna is hand-carved in the workshops of Demi Art S.r.l. in Santa Cristina in the South Tyrolean Gardena Valley – a region known for centuries for its woodcarving. Under the artistic direction of master sculptor Karl Demetz, each figure is made in a careful, multi-stage process: selection and drying of the wood, cutting, rough and fine carving, sanding, priming (gesso) and – depending on the variant – hand-painting with oil paints.

The preferred material is lime wood, prized for its fine grain and even structure, which lets even the smallest details stand out clearly. For larger versions, Swiss stone pine or maple is sometimes used. After carving comes the careful final inspection before each Madonna leaves the studio.

The available finishes range from natural (sanded) through stained or multicolour stained to coloured (hand-painted).

Every Rose Madonna is a handmade one-off and – depending on the series – may bear the Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms the authentic origin and traditional manufacture. She thus stands as an image of genuine Gardena craftsmanship – made with love, skill and decades of experience.
