Description & details

The “Mother of the Family” shows Mary as protector of families and children. She is a reminder that faith grows in the everyday life of the family – an image of Mary for the shared home.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The Madonna “Mother of the Family” embodies deep trust in the protection and care of the Mother of God. Her widely spread cloak wraps a family – father, mother, son and daughter – as an image of cohesion, love and divine help. This depiction recalls the Madonnas of the Protective Mantle of the late medieval tradition, who stand over people as an image of divine blessing.

Here Mary is shown not as a distant saint but as an approachable, motherly figure. Her calm gaze and sheltering gesture create an atmosphere of peace and security. The figure stands for trust, hope and gratitude – values that are alive in every family.

Whether as a devotional figure, a sign of blessing for the home or a gift for family occasions such as a wedding, a birth or an anniversary: the Madonna “Mother of the Family” recalls the bond that joins people to one another and to their faith. She is a quiet symbol of love and protection that brings a harmonious, peaceful aura to any room.

Finish, origin & special features

The Madonna “Mother of the Family” is carved entirely by hand in the South Tyrolean Gardena Valley. For centuries this region has been regarded as a centre of European woodcarving and is known worldwide for its artful Madonna and nativity figures. Under the direction of experienced woodcarvers, each figure is created step by step from carefully selected lime wood.

The production process follows traditional techniques: after the wood is cut comes the rough carving, in which the basic form emerges. The finest details – faces, hands, folds of the robe – are then worked out in the fine carving. The surface is then smoothed and, depending on the variant, further refined:

natural: finely sanded, emphasises the pure structure of the wood

stained / multicolour stained: natural tint with discreet colour gradients

coloured: hand-painted with oil paints, often with golden accents

Every figure is given a protective lacquer and subjected to a strict final inspection. On request it may bear the Val Gardena quality seal – a sign of verified origin and craft precision.

The Madonna “Mother of the Family” thus joins centuries-old craftsmanship with spiritual symbolic power. She stands for the values that distinguish the Gardena Valley: care, devotion and the deep bond between faith and art.
