Motif & meaning

The Madonna with Child “Mother of Love” embodies the central symbol of Christian charity and security. In her gentle posture and the tender gesture with which she presses the Child Jesus to her, the unshakeable love of a mother is reflected – at once human and divine. The figure recalls that love, trust and protection are the strongest bonds between human beings and heaven.

The motif is among the best-loved depictions in Marian iconography and has had a firm place in art history for centuries. The slightly inclined head, the peaceful face and the graceful lines of the robe create an atmosphere of stillness and inner peace. She invites you to find a moment of reflection in a hectic everyday life and to recognise the divine in the everyday.

As a gift for christenings, weddings or religious feasts, this Madonna becomes a sign of heartfelt closeness. She stands for the strength of faith, the protection of the family and gratitude for life. Whether in the living room, a prayer room or as the focus of home devotion, her aura is calming and comforting at once.

Finish, origin & special features

The Madonna with Child “Mother of Love” is made by the tradition-rich woodcarving workshop Demi Art in the Gardena Valley (Val Gardena, South Tyrol) – a place known for centuries for its masterly woodcarving. Under the direction of master sculptor Karl Demetz, works are created there that unite craft precision and artistic expression. Each figure is carved individually from selected lime wood, a material that is ideal for detailed work thanks to its fine grain and soft structure.

The production process follows the classic steps of South Tyrolean woodcarving: after careful selection of the wood comes the rough carving, followed by the fine carving and precise sanding. For variants with a painted finish, the surface is then primed (gesso) before experienced craftspeople paint the figure with oil paints and add golden accents. For the “genuine gold leaf” and “antique genuine gold leaf” finishes, gold leaf is applied that gives a warm, noble radiance – in the antique variant with a characteristic crackle for a traditional patina.

Each figure goes through a final quality inspection before it is carefully packed. On request the Madonna may bear a Val Gardena quality seal, which confirms authenticity and origin.

The combination of classic craftsmanship, religious symbolism and regional identity makes each of these Madonnas an unmistakable one-of-a-kind piece. It joins Alpine tradition with spiritual depth – a piece of South Tyrolean cultural history, made for people who value authenticity, faith and artful design.
