“I am the good shepherd,” says Jesus in the Gospel of John. The statue shows him with a sheep on his shoulders and a second resting at his feet – an image of God's care, who gives up on no one.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The motif of the Good Shepherd is among the central emblems of the Christian faith. It stands for care, protection, trust and the sheltering closeness that accompanies people through every situation in life. The statue shows the shepherd with a sheep on his shoulders – a traditional sign that no one is lost – and a second that rests at his feet and expresses security. The calm of his gaze and his quiet posture create an atmosphere of silent confidence.
In living rooms, devotional areas or chapels, the depiction recalls that care and protection are always present, regardless of outward circumstances. It appeals to people who are looking for a strengthening symbol in times of change or transition, and to families who would like to place their everyday life under a quiet sign of accompaniment. The motif is also easy for children to understand and positively regarded, which is why it is especially often given for christenings, First Holy Communion and similar occasions.
The Good Shepherd is also suitable for pastoral work and for accompanying the sick or the bereaved, as it conveys comfort and closeness without being intrusive. Its warm, inviting depiction makes it a timeless symbol of hope – in private surroundings as well as in church spaces.
Finish, origin & special features
The “Good Shepherd” statue is made entirely in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, an area with a deeply rooted tradition of religious woodcarving. The lime wood chosen for this motif has a fine grain, which allows precise, soft working of facial features, fleece textures and folds of the robe. From cutting to size to the final inspection, each statue is made in genuine handwork by experienced sculptors.
In the rough cut the basic forms of the shepherd, the sheep and the cloak are laid out first. In the fine cut the characteristic details then emerge: the calm expression, the careful posture of the sheep on his shoulders, the flowing folds of the robe and the shepherd's staff. Every line is set deliberately, so that posture and expression work in harmony. After the carving process, the surface is smoothed and, depending on the finish, refined further.
Stained and multicolour stained finishes strengthen the sculptural depth and give the motif warm, earthy colour gradations. Hand-painted versions are made with traditional oil colours, which allow soft nuancing and make the animals look especially lively. Gold accents can discreetly highlight details such as the edges of the cloak, with the gold leaf applied and protected with care.
At the end there is a strict quality inspection, which checks the craft precision, the expressive power of the motif and the uniformity of the surfaces. Because of the natural grain and individual handwork, each statue is one of a kind. Depending on the series, it may carry a Val Gardena quality seal, which stands for inspected woodcarving from South Tyrol.
This combination of traditional sculpture, careful hand finishing and the moving symbolism of the Good Shepherd creates a work of art that is equally suited to private rooms, churches and places of devotion, and as a valued gift.
