St Sebastian was an officer of the Roman guard and was shot with arrows because of his faith. He is patron saint of marksmen and is invoked against epidemics; his feast day is 20 January.

Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Sebastian embodies courage, faithfulness and steadfast devotion to God even in times of greatest distress. The martyr, bound to a tree, has been venerated since late antiquity as a symbol of steadfastness and spiritual strength. His calm, almost serene posture despite the arrows piercing him points not only to personal suffering but also to the power of faith and the hope of divine support.
In church settings as well as in the private prayer room, the figure recalls that inner strength often grows from devotion and that even great trials can be borne. It is suited to places meant to give comfort and orientation, and is often valued for memorial days, name days or special spiritual moments. The combination of vulnerable physicality and timeless sublimity makes the depiction of St Sebastian one of the most expressive motifs of Christian art.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Sebastian is made in careful handwork in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, a traditional centre of sacred wood sculpture. The lime wood used is gently dried before cutting and rough carving fix the basic forms of body, tree trunk and arrows. In the fine carving the characteristic details are worked out: the realistic anatomy, the softly falling folds of the loincloth, the wood structure of the tree trunk and the precisely placed arrows. This filigree carving requires a trained hand and years of experience.
The particular quality of the hand-painted finish shows in the surface finishing. In the coloured versions, skin tones, arrows and areas of cloth are painted individually by hand, which makes the scene look lively and harmonious.
Before each figure leaves the workshop, it undergoes a precise quality inspection. Depending on the series, it may bear a Val Gardena quality seal confirming its origin in Val Gardena. Through the precise workmanship, the high-quality wood and the careful final finishing, every depiction of St Sebastian acquires an unmistakable presence – a unique one-of-a-kind piece for churches, chapels, memorial rooms or private places of prayer.
