Motif & meaning
The depiction of St Roch is among the most impressive motifs of the Christian pictorial tradition. He has been venerated for centuries as a pilgrim saint and patron saint in times of illness. The iconographic features – pilgrim's staff, hat and scallop shell – refer to his path in life, while the wound on his thigh recalls his own story of suffering. In this version the saint is accompanied by a child who looks up at him with questioning attention. This encounter gives the figure a special emotional depth and makes the message of compassion and intercession immediately tangible.
Whether in churches, chapels or private prayer rooms, the figure radiates calm and hope. Many people choose St Roch as a sign of protection, confidence or thanks. As a gift for recovery, for religious feasts or for personal life events, too, this motif has a strong symbolic effect. The posture of the child turning to the saint opens a quiet dialogue that speaks to viewers of every age and strengthens the spiritual message of the figure.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure is made following the old carving tradition of Val Gardena in South Tyrol, an area that has been known for centuries for its wood sculpture. Selected lime wood forms the basis for the fine modelling: it allows precise cuts and clear contours, as they become visible in the robe, the facial features and the posture of saint and child. After cutting comes the careful rough and fine carving, in which the characteristic folds, structures and transitions are worked out by hand.
Depending on the finish, the figure is refined differently. The natural version emphasises the pure form and the grain of the wood. The multicolour stained version gives a warm effect with additional depth. The painted colour version is coloured layer by layer by hand, with harmonious colour transitions and subtle gold accents highlighting the motif. Finishes with genuine gold leaf produce a finely shimmering accent that particularly highlights areas of the cloak and elements of the staff.
Finally, every figure is protected and put through a thorough quality check. Slight variations in grain and application of colour are characteristic of handmade one-of-a-kind pieces. Depending on the series, the figure may bear the Val Gardena label, which stands for regional origin and craft authenticity. This combination of material, traditional skill and fine finishing makes the depiction of St Roch a work of art that unfolds its effect in sacred and private spaces alike.
