Motif & meaning
The figure of St Padre Pio is among the most venerated depictions in more recent Church history. His biography is marked by deep spirituality, care and the willingness to stand by people in need. The blessing hand points to his role as spiritual companion, while the rosary recalls his inner bond with prayer and meditation. In the calm posture lies a special mixture of humility and strength that still speaks to many believers today.
The depiction is suited both to private places of prayer and to sacred spaces, where Padre Pio is often chosen as a comforting support and as a symbol of trust and hope. The fine modelling of the robes and the warm-looking expression convey the gentleness that is central in many depictions of this saint. People who seek a moment of recollection or inner balance in everyday life in particular find the figure a soothing presence.
At religious milestones such as Communion, Confirmation or a personal new beginning, the figure of St Padre Pio can be a meaningful companion. It recalls values such as mercy, care and the power of prayer. Through its craft execution it also takes on the character of a lasting keepsake that can give inspiration for years.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of St Padre Pio is created in a long-established woodcarving setting in Val Gardena, known for centuries for its sacred woodwork. Every figure begins with the selection of high-quality lime wood, whose fine structure is particularly well suited to richly detailed sacred motifs. The wood is carefully dried to create a stable basis for the later fine carving. In the rough carving the basic forms are laid out, before the sculptor works out robes, facial features, hands and accessories such as the rosary step by step in the fine carving. This process demands not only technical skill but also a feeling for expression and harmony.
After carving comes sanding, in which the surface is smoothed and prepared for the desired finish. Depending on the finish, the figure is multicolour stained or painted by hand in colour. The colour painting is done layer by layer, with all nuances set by hand.
Every figure is one of a kind, as both the natural material and the craft process bring small variations. These differences are part of the identity of genuine woodcarving and make every statue unique. Depending on the series, the figure may bear a Val Gardena quality seal confirming its origin in Val Gardena.
The combination of high-quality material selection, traditional handwork and the variety of available surfaces gives every depiction of St Padre Pio a special craft value. It is therefore suited both to collectors and to furnishing private and sacred spaces.
