Motif & meaning

The depiction of St John Paul II combines the dignity of his office with remarkable warmth and closeness to the people. The papal cross, which he holds in both hands, recalls his role as shepherd and companion for believers all over the world. His gently inclined head and friendly expression reflect the attitude that shaped his pontificate: courage, dedication and a deep trust in the power of faith.

In prayer rooms, chapels and private living areas the motif develops a quiet spiritual appeal. The figure is suited to memorial and feast days, ordination celebrations or as a gift of gratitude. Collectors, too, appreciate the clear symbolism, the characteristic features and the timeless expression, which conveys both personal connection and cultural significance.

Finish, origin & special features

In Val Gardena in South Tyrol, every figure of St John Paul II is made in an elaborate, traditional process. The selection of the wood, its expert drying and the precise cutting form the basis for the fine craft work. During the rough and fine carving, facial features, hands, the papal cross and the folds of the robe are modelled step by step. These stages demand experience and a sure sense of proportion and expression.

The different finishes give each figure its own character. Natural shows the wood clearly and unaltered. Stained and multicolour stained versions emphasise structure and depth. The painted colour finish brings out robe details, shadows and fine gold accents to particular effect. Each surface is shaped with care and reflects the long tradition of regional woodcarving. Once all stages are complete, a careful final inspection follows; depending on the series, the figure may bear the Val Gardena quality seal.

The combination of careful handwork, high-quality material and a clear iconographic design results in an object of lasting value. The figure is suited to collections, places of prayer and living spaces where religious devotion and craft tradition are equally appreciated.
