St George on horseback is among the most powerful motifs of wooden saint statues: a rider facing the dragon. This statue is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol), and because every piece is made individually, your statue is one of a kind.
George is one of the best-known martyrs of the early Church. According to tradition he was a soldier and died around 303 because of his faith; little is certain about his life. The fight with the dragon is a medieval legend and stands as an image of the victory of faith over evil. In art, George therefore appears as a knight in armour, often on horseback and with a lance. He is the patron saint of riders, soldiers and scouts and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers; his feast day is 23 April.
