He stands upright, the dragon at his feet: this wooden statue shows St George in the struggle for the good. It is hand-carved in Val Gardena (South Tyrol); every statue has a different grain and is therefore one of a kind.
According to tradition George was a soldier who died around 303 under Emperor Diocletian because of his faith. Little is historically certain. The fight with the dragon is a medieval legend and not a factual account; it stands as an image of the victory of faith over evil. George is depicted as a knight in armour with a lance, sometimes with a flag showing a red cross on a white ground. His feast day is 23 April. He is regarded as the patron saint of riders and soldiers, of scouts and of England, and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
