Description & details

Francis of Assisi gave up his wealth to live in poverty and founded the Franciscan Order. The birds at his side recall his sermon to the animals; he is the patron saint of animals and the environment, and his Canticle of the Sun praises God in creation. His feast day is 4 October.

Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol). Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning

The statue of St Francis takes up one of the best-known emblems of his spirituality: the intimate bond between humankind and creation. The birds that approach him with trust stand for the harmony between all creatures and recall his sermon to the animals – an expression of deep respect for all life. The saint's posture, the upward gaze and the gently outstretched hand reflect openness, peacefulness and a meditative relationship with nature.

This depiction is especially suited to rooms where calm, mindfulness and an atmosphere close to nature are wanted – whether in chapels, monasteries, meditation rooms or private living areas. St Francis is often chosen as a companion by people who campaign on ecological issues, who seek closeness to nature or who value a spiritual orientation based on simplicity and gratitude.

As a gift for religious celebrations, ordinations, jubilees or a name day, too, the statue has high symbolic value. It recalls values such as peace, humility and responsibility for creation – timeless themes that become visible in this depiction in a harmonious way.

Finish, origin & special features

The statue of St Francis is made in traditional South Tyrolean woodcarving, a craft that has been cultivated in Val Gardena for centuries. Selected lime wood forms the basis for the fine modelling. After the wood is cut to size comes the rough cut, in which the saint's characteristic posture and the position of the birds are laid out. In the fine cut that follows, the folds of the habit, the filigree outlines of the birds and the face and hands are worked out with great precision.

Depending on the chosen finish, the statue receives its individual finish. The natural variant emphasises the pure wood structure and the craft of the cut. The stained finishes strengthen the depth of the form and convey a warm, harmonious look. In the painted version, the earthy tones of the Franciscan habit and the fine colour nuances of the birds are carefully built up and shaded by hand. Each colour is applied individually and then protected, so that a lively yet coherent overall picture emerges.

Finally, each statue goes through a strict quality inspection in which proportions, lines and surfaces are carefully checked. Slight differences in grain and paint application are a natural part of handmade wood art and give each statue its unmistakable character. Depending on the series, the Val Gardena label may be enclosed and confirm the origin from the tradition-rich carving region.

Through the combination of a strongly symbolic depiction, precise hand carving and careful surface treatment, the statue is suited not only to sacred spaces but also to living areas and places of reflection – wherever an expression of peace, closeness to nature and spiritual depth is wanted.
