This Florian figure is modelled on the Schwanthaler family of sculptors, who shaped the Baroque in Upper Austria. St Florian is patron saint of the fire brigade; his feast day is 4 May.
Every figure is hand-carved in our partner workshop in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – production is overseen by master sculptor Karl Demetz. Woodcarving has a long tradition in the Gardena Valley: as early as the 17th century it was widespread there. Every piece is one of a kind: grain, carving marks and painting always turn out a little different.

Motif & meaning
The Schwanthaler Florian embodies one of the most tradition-rich forms of depicting St Florian. Inspired by the famous Schwanthaler school of the south German Baroque, this figure unites faith, art and symbolic power. The saint is shown as a Roman officer extinguishing a burning house with a bucket of water – a symbol of protection and help in danger.
St Florian has been venerated for centuries as patron saint of the fire brigade, chimney sweeps and homeowners. His name stands for courage, self-sacrifice and the readiness to stand by others. The flames at the base recall the dangers of everyday life, while the banner and the upright posture stand for victory, faith and divine strength.
The figure takes up typical elements of the Baroque visual language: movement, expressiveness and emotional depth. In this way the Schwanthaler Florian becomes not only a religious depiction but a symbol of human virtue and divine care. As a gift, an honour or a symbol of protection, he brings a message of courage, peace and trust into your own home.
Finish, origin & special features
The figure of the Schwanthaler Florian is made entirely by hand in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) – a region famous for its woodcarving for generations. Under the direction of experienced masters, sculptures are created here that combine artistic ambition with craft precision.
The wood used – preferably finely grained lime wood – is dried naturally over months and carefully cut. The production process follows a centuries-old tradition: from the rough cut through the fine carving to the detailed working of face, robe and flame motif, every figure is completed in several steps.
The finishes give each sculpture its individual character:
– multicolour stained (3 tones) – harmonious colour gradations in earth tones
– genuine gold leaf – gold leaf finishing by hand
Finally, every figure is sealed with protective varnish and put through a precise quality check. It may bear the Val Gardena quality seal – a guarantee of verified origin and genuine handwork from South Tyrol.
Through this masterly workmanship the Schwanthaler Florian becomes a work of art with soul – a piece of lived faith tradition that combines the beauty of Baroque carving with spiritual symbolism.
