With crown, sword and wheel: the wooden statue of St Catherine of Alexandria tells her story at a glance. It is made by hand in Val Gardena (South Tyrol), each piece with its own grain and therefore one of a kind.
According to tradition, Catherine was an educated young Christian woman from Alexandria who died as a martyr at the beginning of the 4th century. Her life is not historically certain, but she has been venerated for a very long time. According to legend she refuted pagan philosophers in debate, and the wheel on which she was to be executed is said to have broken. That is why she is shown with a broken wheel, crown, sword, book and often a palm branch. Her feast day is 25 November. She is the patron saint of scholars and students, of girls and young women, and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
