Two generations in one statue: St Anne with her daughter Mary is a motif for grandmothers, mothers and anyone who sees family as a gift. Master sculptor Karl Demetz and the carvers in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) work each statue by hand from the wood, so no two are alike – one of a kind.
According to Christian tradition, Anne is the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus. Her name is not in the Bible; it comes from the Protoevangelium of James of the 2nd century. She is remembered on 26 July, together with her husband Joachim. She is the patron saint of mothers and grandmothers, of wives and families, and of miners. In art she is shown as an older woman teaching the young Mary to read, or as “Anna Selbdritt” (St Anne with the Virgin and Child) together with Mary and the Child Jesus.
