Description & details

This cross shows Christ with outstretched arms, the crown of thorns on his head, and close at his side Mary in a cloak, holding a chalice. The surface is rough like hammered wood. Carved in Val Gardena, an unusual version for people looking for a crucifix with Mary.

For Christians the cross is the sign of faith and redemption. Mary is regarded as the mother of Jesus and stands close to him here as well. What the chalice in her hand means exactly is not fixed by the workshop; it is therefore not interpreted here.

  • Finishes: natural: untreated, finely sanded wood; multicolour stained: stained in three tones and waxed, depending on the motif with accents in gold or silver; hand-painted: painted with oil colours, decorated with gold leaf and silver leaf, fixed with lacquer
