It is hand-carved in Val Gardena (South Tyrol), and because every piece gets its own grain and details, it is one of a kind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMartin of Tours became a soldier as the son of an officer, was baptised and later lived as a monk; in 371 he became Bishop of Tours and cared for the poor. According to legend he shared his cloak with a beggar outside Amiens, and the following night Christ is said to have appeared to him in the half cloak. The cloak stands for compassion for people in need. Martin is patron saint of the poor and beggars, of soldiers and travellers. On his feast day, 11 November, children walk through the streets with lanterns, and in many places bread or clothing is donated.
