After his baptism he became a monk, and in 371 the people chose him as Bishop of Tours. The most famous story is a legend: at the gates of Amiens he used his sword to share his soldier's cloak with a freezing beggar. Martin is patron saint of soldiers, of the poor and beggars, of travellers and of Burgenland. His feast day is 11 November.
