It is carved in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) by a practised hand, and because wood never yields two identical pieces, every statue is one of a kind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eElizabeth of Hungary (also known as Elizabeth of Thuringia, 1207–1231) was a Hungarian king's daughter and landgravine at the Wartburg. After the death of her husband she founded a hospital in Marburg and cared for the poor and sick there; she was canonised in 1235. Her feast day is 19 November. She is regarded as the patron saint of Caritas and nursing, of the needy, of widows and of bakers.
